Ghanaians are being asked to dismiss suggestions by the Attorney-General to the effect that homosexuality between two consenting adults is not a crime.Martin Amidu, A-G, had explained that though a same sex relationship is considered culturally wrong, individuals have sexual discretion as long as it is within the confines of their homes.He said this at a press conference to explain Ghana’s position on homosexuality.However, the Central Ghana Conference of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church disagrees.President of the Conference, Pastor Emmanuel Denteh, says the Attorney General’s explanation falls short of moral, cultural and divine laws.The Seventh-Day Adventist Church recently condemned homosexuality, and described practitioners as ‘sinners who need grace’.Pastor Denteh described Mr. Amidu’s comments as surprising and unfortunate.According to him, Ghanaians cannot justifiably accept, in his own words, ‘an alien and abominable act’.Pastor Denteh is already calling for amendment in the country’s laws on homosexuality.Section 104 (part b) of the Criminal Act of 1960 states, "a person who has unnatural carnal knowledge of another person of not less than sixteen years of age with the consent of that other person commits a misdemeanor".Pastor Denteh acknowledges such amendment will take some time, but he insists it is important to safeguard the moral decency of Ghanaians. He wants religious and civil society groups to lead the crusade against homosexuality in Ghana.“Although this lawyer has said this, we are not going to condone that. Even fellow colleague lawyers condemned that, and the church will continue to condemn. So what this Attorney General is saying is something that should not go-by”, Pastor Denteh insisted.Arguing from a Biblical standpoint, he said “homosexuality is a sin against God; that is not how God created human beings. He created man and woman and blessed them to produce so any perversion of that is wrong”.Meanwhile, the SDA Church is initiating an education programme for its members on the subject.Pastor Denteh said though the leadership does not anticipate any of its members is homosexual, such education is in order.“We are educating our youth, parents and everybody in the church. We are not leaving anyone out of this campaign: those in kindergarten and preparatory schools we’ve been teaching them so that the more we teach them, the more they will refrain from them”.
