The Accra Metropolitan Assembly has set 30th September as the deadline to ban unregistered trucks pushers within the restricted areas in the capital city.
Legal Officer of the AMA Yaw Twumasi Ankrah tells Asempa Fm that out of about 3,500 trucks within the city, only 500 have been registered.
Lawyer Twumasi Ankrah made this know after entourage from the AMA paid a visit to Agbogbloshie where truck owners mainly operate to give them a final warning to register their trucks.
According to Lawyer Twumasi Ankrah, the initial deadline was 15th September, 2011 but leadership of the Scrap Dealers Association pleaded with the Assembly for extension of the deadline in order to educate their members on the need to register their trucks.
Some of the restricted areas for unregistered trucks include Labadi Beach Hotel Street, Accra High street, Korle-bu street, Airport, 37 vicinity, Old Parliament House, Achimota, Tesano Police Depot, Circle and Adabraka.
Lawyer Twumasi Ankrah added that the leadership of the Association asked the Assembly to reduce the registration cost which the Mayor agreed, and the Assembly has decided to absorb the cost of the number plates while the truck pushers pay for the Business Operating Tax at the cost of GH12 per year which is equivalent to GH¢1 a month.
Lawyer Twumasi Ankrah stressed that from the beginning of next month, any truck pusher without registration number using the aforementioned routes will be arrested and prosecuted.
