Wild jubilation swept through towns and villages in the Obuasi municipality when news broke that a 22-year old serial rapist who had become a terror to women in that community had been slapped with a 10-year jail term by an Obuasi Circuit Court.
The suspect, Kwaku Mensah aka ‘B Kwaku’, was said to have pounced on several women in the community, pulled a knife on them and forcefully dragged them into the bush to rape them.
B. Kwaku was said to have raped some of his victims on more than one occasion and he operated mainly in and around Apitiso, Dokyiwa, Binsere and Apitikooko, all farming communities near Obuasi in the Ashanti Region.
He continued to unleash his unrestrained libido in such a criminal style for over a year until he ran out of luck in June this year when the law caught up with him.
The prosecutor, DSP Yaw Obeng Asubonteng, told the court presided over by Justice Gilbert Ayisi Addo that on Sunday, June 12, 2011, one of the several episodes of terror rapes by B. Kwaku turned bloody when he inflicted multiple cutlass wounds on his victim, 42-year-old Yaa Anane from Apitikooko because she had struggled with him in an attempt to resist being raped.
The victim, who has since been discharged from hospital, was returning home from her farm at Yafodumasi near Apitikooko at about 2:30 pm when B. Kwaku emerged from the bush and engaged her in a conversation.
After walking for some distance, according to prosecution, Kwaku Mensah threw a hefty blow on the woman’s chest. This sent her to the ground and he snatched her mobile phone and cutlass in the process.
B. Kwaku then held Yaa Anane’s hands and dragged her to the bush amidst a fierce struggle as she resisted his attempt to rape her.
Angered by the fierce struggle, Kwaku used the cutlass to inflict multiple slashes on his victim and dragged her again to an orange farm by the roadside.
The victim then raised the alarm and the suspect, upon sensing danger, ran into the bush when two witnesses, Shadrack Brenya and Charles Fosu, emerged at the scene and rescued her.
Charles, who was manning a motorcycle, rushed the victim to the hospital after informing members of the victim’s household of the incident.
Before that incident, B. Kwaku was already on a police wanted list for allegedly raping Akosua Iddrisu, a pregnant woman resident at Binsere.
Akosua was on her way to her boyfriend’s house at Dokyiwa, another nearby village, when B. Kwaku emerged from the bush around 10 pm on March 30 this year.
Inspector Albert Anani, the prosecutor in that case, narrated to the court that B. Kwaku held Akosua Iddrisu and dragged her into the bush where he violently raped her, though she begged him to spare her because of her pregnancy.
He also took away the victim’s LG mobile phone valued at GH¢40 and a torchlight.
When B. Kwaku first appeared in court, he pretended to be mentally insane but he was later exposed by psychiatrists who affirmed that the accused was in the best frame of mind.
Hundreds of women from the four communities, who thronged the courtroom, expressed their satisfaction at the outcome of the case and prayed that a harsh punishment be given to Kwaku for the second case involving the raping of the pregnant woman.
