The Minister of Roads and Highways, Mr Joe Gidisu, has ended an inspection tour of a section of the Eastern Corridor road in the Volta and Northern regions, with a reassurance to the people that there are no longer fallacies on the construction of the road as intended by the government. He, therefore, announced that two contractors would start work on two lots of the road by the end of September, adding, “It is not a matter of months but weeks for a drastic change on this flagship project and longest corridor in the country.” He said work would start on the Asikuma-Hohoe and the Nkwanta-Kpassa portions with funding from the supplementary budget, with another section, the Dodo-Pepesu to Nkwanta, to be funded with $100 million from the European Union (EU) facility. He further disclosed that a $250 million facility from the Brazilian government would cover the Damanko-Bimbilia-Yendi section and beyond to be started later. Meanwhile, the road has deteriorated so much at the Salifu area in the Nkwanta District that vehicles loaded with yams and other foodstuffs get stuck in the mud, such that drivers’ frustration had generated uncomplimentary utterances towards government officials.
