The much-awaited 3rd Cup of African Nations for Amputee Football (CANAF 2011) tournament scheduled to take place in Accra from 15th -25th October, 2011 has now been shifted to 18th-27th November, 2011 to ensure its successful implementation. According a press release from the local secretariat, Mr. Francis Adjetey Sowah, President of the Amputee Football Federation of Africa (AFFA), who also doubles as the President of the Ghana Amputee Football Federation (GAFF), said the decision was taken in consultation with government and key stakeholders. He expressed regret at the turn of events but gave the assurance that “our commitment to making CANAF 2011 a memorable tournament”. However, he said the new arrangements would also afford the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) and participating nations ample time to prepare adequately, to forestall any hitch. Twelve (12) African Nations, namely Ghana, South Africa, Kenya, DR Congo, Senegal, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Nigeria, Algeria, Egypt, Niger and Angola are expected to participate in this prestigious tournament. Ghana, the best team on the continent and 6th best in the world in Amputee Football, became the first African champions when they won the maiden edition in Sierra Leone in 2007. Ghana once again made history in Argentina last year when they reached the quarter final stage of the Amputee World Cup, the first by any African Nation. The Ghanaian squad would be travelling to the United Kingdom September for trial matches, as part of preparations for the championship.
