President John Evans Atta Mills has said that although the conditions at Sodom and Gomorrah, a slum in Accra, are not the best, a forcible ejection of residents of the area is not an option. He said the government was in talks with the leadership of Sodom and Gomorrah to have the residents transferred to a preferred place. The President, who was addressing the Ghanaian community in New York, on the sidelines of the 66th UN General Assembly, said any action must be carried out with a human face. Responding to calls for a national airline, the President noted that even though a national airline was important, its establishment was not a priority for the government. He noted that considering the problems that the defunct Ghana International Airline (GIA) encountered, and which was still being contested in court, caution must be taken to prevent a recurrence of the present problems. The President said every country had a priority and he (president) would not unduly build the hope of Ghanaians in the Diaspora into thinking that a new airline would be established soon. President Mills said the government was focused on building a better Ghana, stressing that, “we may belong to different political parties and different religious backgrounds, but at the end of it all, we are one people with one destiny.” He said with unity and one purpose, the people could all contribute to lift each other from the quagmire of poverty and squalor. President Mills admitted that even though the country was faced with challenges, the government had put in place measures to fix the economy and improve the lives of Ghanaians.
