The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Ayensuano in the Eastern Region, Samuel Ayeh Paye has suggested that the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) meter acquisition should be made free to enhance accessibility of the facility. Mr. Paye said getting easy access to the electricity meters will reduce the problem of illegal connections which often result in fire outbreaks in the country. He said if the meters were given freely, more people will go in for their individual meters and the ECG will get more revenue from credits bought for recharging or bills paid to them. Samuel Ayeh Paye made the suggestion on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem on Tuesday during a panel discussion on illegal connections and its attendant fire outbreaks in the country. According to the MP, “if the ECG cannot provide free meters due to cost involved, the cost can be spread over a period and the consumer can pay while recharging their credit cards”. However, a Board Member of the Electricity Company of Ghana, Bernard Allotey Jacobs rejected the suggestion from the MP claiming that, the cost involved in purchasing the electricity meters is so huge that, the meters cannot be provided for free. He noted that “some meters cost as much as $125 and such a facility cannot be provided for free.
