A 48-year-old trader, Perpetual Adu, is in trouble with the law for allegedly using the name of the Deputy Chief of Staff, Mr Alex Segbefia, and a former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, to defraud six people to the tune of GH¢45,550.
Perpetual, a resident of Accra, reportedly managed to convince her victims, including a medical officer, that she was a National Democratic Congress (NDC) activist who apart from working closely with Mr Segbefia, was also the personal assistant to Mrs Rawlings, for which reason she could help them secure auctioned cars from the Castle.
She is currently facing six counts of defrauding by false pretences to which she has pleaded not guilty.
The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly Circuit Court, presided over by Mr William Boampong which is trying the accused, has since September 5, 2011 granted her bail in the sum of GH¢80,000 with a surety to be justified.
However, the accused remains in prison custody because of difficulty in producing the surety.
Prosecuting, Detective Inspector Assenso said all the six complainants lived in Kumasi.
Between June and October 2010, the accused approached the complainants that she could help them secure auctioned vehicles through her contacts with the Castle.
The prosecutor said the complainants, consequently, gave various amounts of money totaling GH¢45,550 to Perpetual.
The accused could, however, not provide the cars and instead told the complainants that Mr Segbefia had delayed the process.
On realising that the accused had no connections with the Castle, the complainants demanded their money back but she went into hiding.
She was later arrested at her hideout and, in her statement to the police; she admitted collecting the money from the six people.
