NPP Parliamentary candidate for Asuogyaman constituency Kofi Osei Ameyaw has attributed the heavy vehicular congestion in Accra to the narrow nature of roads in the capital. The size of the road in some parts of Accra ten years ago remains the same, he said, without any expansion. Most workers spend much more time commuting from home to the office than working, due to the heavy vehicular congestion in Accra. This has been attributed largely to increased population, bad nature of the roads and increasing number of vehicles on the roads. It is estimated that the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority averagely takes delivery of 800 vehicles per week. Kofi Osei Ameyaw who is also former MP for Asuogyaman therefore called on the Ministry of Roads and Highways and the Urban Roads Department to consider expanding major routes in the nation’s capital to ease the traffic congestion. He tasked the Urban Roads Department to channel funds raised from the Tema Motorway, to undertake expansion works on the roads in the city. He also noted that productive hours are spent in traffic due to the narrow nature of the roads, adding that this does not only affect productivity but also the health of the citizenry. Adom FM’s current affairs and morning show, Dwaso Nsem on Wednesday dispatched a team of reporters across Accra to assess the traffic situation. On the Ofankor-Achimota stretch of the Accra-Kumasi trunk, Afia Amankwah-Tamakloe reported that passengers had a torrid time as ongoing construction works on that road virtually grounded vehicles. The situation was no different on the Madina-Legon-37 road. Meanwhile, Kweku Antwi-Otoo who reported from the Mallam Junction said commercial drivers had taken undue advantage of the traffic situation on that road to charge exorbitant fares. He said the situation has seen some commuters patronising the services of commercial motor bikes popularly called “Okada”, although banned by the Motor Transport and Traffic Unit (MTTU) of the Police Service.
