The Vice-President, Mr John Dramani Mahama, has assured the people of the Volta Region that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government will collaborate effectively with the chiefs and elders of the region to bring development to the region. He said the government was very grateful to the people of the region for the support they gave the NDC during the 2008 elections. The Vice-President said this when he paid a courtesy call on the Awomefia of Anlo, Togbui Sri III, during a visit to Keta last weekend. Mr Mahama congratulated Togbui Sri III, on behalf of the government, on his enstoolment as the Awomefia of Anlo. He said the government was in the process of implementing the Better Ghana agenda the NDC had promised the people of Ghana and explained that the government was currently working on a loan from the China Development Bank, part of which would be used to provide a fishing harbour for Keta to help improve fishing in Keta and the entire region. Mr Mahama added that the government was working on the roads in the region, noting that this year’s work would start on the eastern corridor road, which he described as very important to the people of the Volta Region because it was the fastest link between the southern part of the country and the northern part. Togbui Sri III, for his part, welcomed the Vice-President and assured him of the support of his people. He, however, expressed worry over the way the sea had destroyed almost all the houses at Horvi and Blekusu, both communities in the Keta municipality. He expressed gratitude to the Vice President for the visit and called on the government to intervene quickly, lest the sea destroyed the major road from Horvi to Aflao. The Vice-President in response gave all assurance that the Minister of Water Resources, Works and Housing would be tasked to inspect the affected areas and find solutions to the problems. Mr Mahama was accompanied by a Deputy Chief of Staff, Ms Valerie Sawyerr. Others present were the Municipal Chief executive for Keta, Mr Sylvester Toyieva; Togbui Boni II, Mr. Samlafo IV, Togbui Dzelu IV, Togbui Ediho II, Togbui Roni IV, Mr Fred Gobah Tengey, Mr Horghi Joseph and other dignitaries.
