More than 50 families occupying flats belonging to the State Housing Company (SHC) at Kanda in Accra, have vowed to resist attempts by the Company to relocate them.

Although their 60-year lease with the company is yet to elapse, the company wants them to relocate to pave way for the construction of plush apartments and buildings at the area, considered a prime location. 

The occupants are vowing to resist the relocation plan contending that, the proposed South Valley relocation site is too small to accommodate the huge families occupying the three flats.

Seventy-five-year-old Solace Mortey, a retired teacher who has been occupying the flat since 1975 says she has more years to stay in the flat before the expiration of her agreement hence she will not move.

“This place is very spacious, our children and grandchildren get enough space to play here compared to where they are taking us.

“They are going to dump us at a smaller place, but we are pensioners so where are we going to get the money to pay for the lift and other amenities?” she told Joy News’ Maxwell Agbagba.

According to her, the new site does not have a good drainage system and they fear for their lives hence their resistance.

Mrs Mortey said they obtained a court ruling in their favour but the SHC appealed the case and secured a judgment in their favour.

“They went and said the court should force us to go and occupy the buildings at South Valley, but they were fortunate and won the case. They are now bringing lease papers saying that we should go.

An executive member of the Kanda Residents Association, Derrick Ope wants the SHC to listen to their plea or allow them to exhaust their lease. 

He said the proposed site is one used for social gathering and other important community events.

"We don't understand why they are behaving this way because since our lease period is not due, they should give us time for our lease to expire," he said.
