The youth of Agogo in the Asante-Akyem North municipality in Ashanti, on Saturday carried out their threat to prevent the performance of the funeral of a relative of the Paramount Chief, Nana Akuoko Sarpong, in the town.
The youth had threatened to cause trouble if the paramount chief dared to perform the funeral while Fulani herdsmen were still in the area.
They issued the threat last Wednesday at a meeting with the Municipal Security Council to discuss the tension over the activities of the Fulani herdsmen and their cattle.
The youth alleged that Nana Akuoko Sarpong, as well as his elders and some prominent people in the area, owned some of the cattle and were, therefore, finding it difficult to evict the herdsmen.
According to the Municipal Chief Executive, Thomas Osei Bonsu, there was no attempt by the family to perform the funeral or to bury the corpse, because of the charged atmosphere over the issue.
“My own mother’s funeral is next week but because of the situa¬tion we do not know what to do. We are all affected,” Mr. Bonsu told the Times.
He said at a Security Council meeting on Friday that it was decided to wait for the action the Paramount Chief would take on the issue.
Reportedly, Nana Akuoko Sarpong had petitioned the Presidency to intervene in the matter before it got out of hand.
The chief and his elders have been accused by the youth of “selling” the Afram Plains to the herdsmen who have been destroying the farmlands of the inhabitants through cattle grazing and committing crimes like rape, robbery and murder.
Following persistent reports, a joint military and police swoop last month resulted in the arrest of seven herdsmen for alleged armed rob¬bery and murder for which they are being prosecuted.
