New Patriotic Party parliamentary candidate for the Dome/Kwabenya constituency, Sarah Adwoa Safo has described as disheartening the constant harassment and threats on the lives of Market women at Dome in Accra by the task force from the Municipal Assembly to vacate the place.
She said the situation has created a sense of hopelessness for the women who sell in the market and whose means of livelihood are totally dependent on the Dome market.
The Dome market is to undergo a major reconstruction into modern day stalls for the market women and to decongest the place to make it more accessible to customers.
According to the Ga East Municipal Assembly, after completion of the project, every market woman would have an equal opportunity to access the market.
But Adwoa Safo at a press conference Monday said prior to the construction of the modern market, some unknown persons from the municipal assembly had been extorting monies from the market women with the promise to give them space upon completion of the project.
“It is on record that market women are charged between 80 cedis for a black card and 120 cedis for a green card with an assurance that when the project is completed they would be given space to sell,” she added.
The procurement lawyer who appeared very worried about the issue urged that Municipal assembly to institute a committee to probe the illegal activities of the persons parading themselves as officials from the assembly.
Adwoa Safo revealed that all attempts to meet the Municipal Chief Executive of the area, John Kwao Sackey has proven futile but pledged her commitment to ensure the matter between the market women and the Municipal Assembly is amicably resolved for peace to prevail in the Dome/Kwabenya constituency.
