The Ghana Chefs Association says the woes of the Ghana School Feeding Programme are the result of contracts awarded to unqualified cooks. The Association claimed the cooks are wives and cronies of government officials, stating that the food should be prepared by professionals such as the Chef Association. The President of the Association, Stephen Cofie Dzilah, made the observations in an interview with Asempa News on the operations of the School feeding Programme in the Country. “The government of Ghana should have contacted the Chef Association before starting the programme instead of giving it to their wives who are cooking anything for the school children,” Mr. Cofie Dzilah stated. He added that the association can mobilize, cook proper and delicious meals for the pupils. “We know how to balance the diet. Anything you give us we know how to cook it. We want the government to come out, call us and give the job to the chefs,” Mr. Cofie Dzilah added. Mr. Cofie Dzilah who claimed he had never tasted any meal prepared for the Ghana School Feeding Programme, explained that there have been several complaints to the association about the unhygienic nature of food prepared, bad services of the cooks and lack of nutrients in the food that are prepared for the children. He therefore wants government to take a bold step and stop house wives from preparing the food for the children. Asked about the cost involved in contracting the programme to the association, compared to that of the so-called house wives, Mr. Cofie Dzilah observed: “When you hire the Chefs Association, it will be better than the housewives. We know how to mobilize things. We can write to the rice companies to supply us in bulk and that will be better. It will be more affordable”.
