Two elderly people were crushed to death by a falling tree in Kumasi on Friday. They were among 15 passengers travelling on an Urvan bus trapped by the tree on the Harper Road at Adum. Both victims, a male and a female in the late 50s, are reported to have died on their way to the hospital. A male minor who sustained injuries on his face, was treated and discharged at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital. Other passengers on board the mangled bus were rescued unharmed. The bus driver and his conductor, who escaped unhurt, told Luv News they were held up in traffic jam, heading from Ahodwo to Adum, when the tree fell on the vehicle. Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service rushed to the scene to cut the tree and ensure free flow of traffic. City Mayor, Samuel Sarpong who later visited the accident scene, described the incident as ‘natural’ and expressed condolence to the bereaved families. The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly is currently embarking on an exercise to prune trees along major roads in the city. Mr. Sarpong is hopeful this will help curtail such disasters. Few months ago, a prominent businessman was killed on the same stretch of the road where the tree fell across the road between the Ridge Police Station and the administration of the KMA.
