Deputy Minister of Health Rojo Mettle-Nunoo has denied saying that the striking doctors should either accept government’s offer or resign. Sections of the media reported on Friday he said the doctors have only two choices; to either take government’s offer or resign, but the deputy minister says he was misrepresented. “People should not quote me out of context because I was simply saying that doctors have the option to either accept government’s negotiated offer or they have the liberty to look elsewhere,” he told Adom News. Mr. Rojo Mettle-Nunoo said his proposal was for a win-win situation where public doctors who felt they were not being paid well by government could consider the option of using the state health facilities for extra commercial work so they could share the profits with government in addition to their salaries. He noted that government had genuine financial challenges which would not allow it to meet the demands of the doctors, so his suggestion could be an option that would make both parties satisfied. Meanwhile, the matter has now gone to compulsory arbitration between the doctors and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) on Monday, to be presided over by the National Labour Commission. The Deputy Minister has however urged the doctors to return to work before the compulsory arbitration starts on Monday, since the labour law did not allow one party to be on strike during the arbitration.
