The Director of Metro Health at the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, Dr. Simpson Anim-Boateng says 82 cases of cholera have been recorded in the Accra metropolis a week after last Wednesday’s torrential rains which flooded the city.
An initial 67 cases were recorded days after the floods last week, but the number according to the Metro Health Director has since risen to 82 cases as at close of Thursday.
Speaking on Multi TV’s current affairs show, pm: EXPRESS, Dr. Anim-Boateng noted that the latest spread of cholera was due to the indiscriminate disposal of human waste, most of which were tied in polythene bags and dumped into the main Odawna drain.
Dr. Anim-Boateng contended that Accra has never been clean despite promises made by the NDC government to rid Accra of filth within its first 100 days of coming into office.
The NDC had listed as part of its achievements within its first 100 days, the ridding of filth in Accra, a claim Dr. Anim-Boateng debunked.
“Accra has never been clean” he argued “Accra is dirty.” We have accredited nine contractors to manage our waste. The contractor supplies bins in the sub-metros assigned them and collects the waste thereof, but some people still dump indiscriminately” Dr. Anim-Boateng contended.
According to the Accra Metro Health Director, a survey conducted by the Metro Health Division of the AMA revealed that close to 70 percent of homes under the AMA’s jurisdiction do not have proper sanitary facilities with just a little over 20 percent of homes in the metro area having proper toilet facilities.
The survey he said further revealed that 90 percent of all houses in the Abossey Okai area lack toilet facilities.
“During the survey, I was in charge of Abossey Okai, so we went from house to house and what we realized was that, [in] some of the houses, we were shown where they used to have toilets but they have now converted them to stores [or] rooms for rent. So in the original plans, they all had toilet facilities, but they have all disappeared” said Dr. Anim-Boateng.
He noted that the AMA has begun prosecuting persons who flout its by-laws on sanitation following a September deadline for all landlords to provide toilet facilities in their homes or face the law.
One thousand, three hundred and sixty-nine persons are to face the law at the AMA’s sanitation courts.
Meanwhile, 78 persons in the Okaikoi North metro have so far been prosecuted at the court.
Dr. Anim- Boateng disclosed that the Metropolitan Assembly is working hard to clean the lavender hill, a place where waste management companies have consistently dumped liquid waste into the sea.
