The National Chief of Fulanis in Ghana, Alhaji Mohammed Bingo has admonished the security agencies to do more to protect his kith and kin.He said while the action of the security agencies in responding to the unprovoked attacks that left 13 herdsmen dead Tuesday night was commendable, the killings could have been prevented if the security agencies had “put their ears on the ground.”Alhaji Bingo was speaking to Joy News’ Israel Laryea Thursday afternoon.He expressed regret at the turn of events fearing many more people may have been killed than discovered by the police.According to him, many victims of the surprised attack ran into the bush with life-threatening injuries sustained from gunshots, cutlass wounds and bow and arrows. Some of those victims, he feared may have died in the bush.Explaining what he said may have precipitated the attack, Alhaji Bingo said a scuffle between a Konkomba man and a Fulani herdsman resulted in the death of the herdsman. Following from this, the Fulanis lodged a complaint with the police who arrested the Konkomba man for questioning.Some Konkombas, apparently unhappy with the arrest of their fellow, he surmised, attacked the Fulanis at night killing 13 and injuring 11, according to police accounts.Alhaji Bingo said he and other leaders of the Fulani community had been making efforts at the national level to rein in errant herdsmen who engage in untoward behavior.Meanwhile the Interior Minister Dr Benjamin Kumbuor has challenged members of the National Peace Council (NPC) to come up with mechanisms to deal with the growing number of violent attacks with ethnic undertones.The minister, who was speaking in Accra at the start of a three-day capacity building workshop for members of the NPC, also pledged government’s commitment to adequately resource the council to facilitate its work.He said researches had shown that the country was doing badly in national integration as many swore allegiance to their ethnic group first before country.Council chair, Most Reverend Professor Emmanuel Asante said the workshop would help members to discharge their mandate effectively.The workshop is being facilitated by the Interior Ministry in collaboration with the UN at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration.
