Ghana’s parliament on Thursday announced a 13-member parliamentary committee to probe activities of Fulani herdsmen across the country after 13 of them, including children and women were killed in Gushiegu, Northern Region.
It is unclear yet what may have led to the deadly attacks, which also saw homes of the nomadic herdsmen razed. It is feared the casualty figures could rise.
The committee chaired by Dr. Ahmed Alhassan Yakubu (NDC, Mion) has 10 weeks to submit a report and it is expected to investigate allegations of criminal activities by the herdsmen, their ethnic background, and how they entered the country among others.
Other members of the committee are Joseph Boahene Aidoo, vice chairman; Haruna Bayariga; Anim Adu Antwi; Kwame Ampofo; Dominic Nitiwul; Hajia Halijie; Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey; Albert Abongo; Simon Edem Tekyimaa; Theophilus Tetteh; Francis Kojo Attah and Wiafe Peprah.
There have been reports of criminal activities including murders, rape, armed raids and highway robberies against Fulani herdsmen across several regions of the country. Others also accuse them of grazing their cattle on farmlands and thereby destroying crops.
Disagreements between Fulani settlers and their hosts, residents of Agogo in the Ashanti Region recently led to a bitter stand-off that ended with the banishment of the settlers. Some of the residents claim the herdsmen were raping their women.
