A Sergeant with the Panthers Unit of the Ghana Police Service has demanded that Central Regional Communications Director of the NDC, Bernard Allotey Jacobs render an unqualified apology to the Inspector General of Police, Paul Tawiah Quaye for calling for his resignation.Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem on Thursday, Sergeant Harry Ayitey Donkor said he disagreed with Allotey Jacobs’ call and suggested that a thorough investigation be carried out about the missing cocaine instead of dismissing the IGP.On Tuesday 13th December 2001, a cocaine exhibit tendered as evidence at the Accra Circuit court was reported to have turned into baking powder under mysterious circumstances, leading to the acquittal of the suspect, one Nana Ama Martins.On Wednesday, December 14, Allotey Jacobs said the continuous stay in office by the IGP, following reports that a slab of cocaine exhibit in the custody of the Police has turned into Sodium Bicarbonate (baking powder), casts a slur on the integrity and professionalism of the Service, and demanded his immediate resignation.Sergeant Ayitey Donkor however said the IGP is not a recruited Constable but was appointed as a competent man to lead the police force by the government.He said Ghana’s democracy is in its early stages and that is why people make unnecessary demands for public figures to be sacked when little mistakes occur in the line of duty, adding Allotey Jacobs lacks knowledge about the activities of the police.He stated that the Police service is a peaceful institution and that is why they are always tolerant, but they will not allow Ghanaians to take their leniency as their weakness.Citing the escape of notorious armed robber, Johnson Kombian from the Tamale Prisons in which one police officer was killed, Sergeant Donkor questioned why no one called for the resignation of the Director of Prisons.He also asked why Ghanaians did not call for heads to roll in the military when soldiers at the 37 Military Hospital maltreated drivers and made them kiss corpses at the hospital’s morgue.
