Vice President John Mahama has directed the police service to suspend its investigations into the cocaine-turned-baking powder saga.
Mr. Mahama gave the directive after a meeting with the Chief Justice, Theodora Wood; the National Security Coordinator, Larry Gbevlo-Lartey and the Chief of Staff, Henry Martey Newman.
Joy News has learnt that the Vice-President, who as acting president in the absence of President John Mills, has instead charged the BNI to institute criminal investigations into the case whilst the Chief Justice conducts a fact-finding probe. The two investigations are supposed to run concurrently. President Mills is on a two week leave.
They have up to December 22, 2011 to present their reports.
Meanwhile, a public enquiry into the case is underway in Accra.
Three police officers have so far testified before the committee insisting that the substance the police tendered in evidence in court was tested to be cocaine.
News of the cocaine exhibit turning into sodium bicarbonate shocked the nation Wednesday following another incident in 2007 where quantities of the illicit drug under police watch were later found to have turned into cassava powder.
The developments have see Ghana's two main political opponents at each other's throat alleging one malfeasance or another.
