The government says it will punish anyone found culpable in the mysterious transformation of an amount of cocaine into baking soda. Vice President John Mahama had earlier ordered the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) to investigate the matter following a meeting with the chief justice. Speaking at the commissioning of a new forensic lab for the Police Service in Accra on Friday, Mr Mahama said the two bodies have been tasked with unearthing the truth surrounding the controversy. “I received information from the IGP that the case went beyond the police because the exhibit was handled not only by the police but also by the court and so I met with the chief justice yesterday (Thursday) and we agreed that the investigation that is currently ongoing will continue,” he said. He further denied that there is confusion in the investigation on the cocaine saga, insisting that the BNI and the Committee set up by the chief justice will be the only institutions collaborating on the matter. The IGP, Paul Tawiah Quaye, had earlier indicated that the police will also carry out investigations into the matter, but Mr. Mahama said he asked the him to discontinue investigations into the case to enable the other two bodies to work on the matter. He stated that the government will ensure that anyone involved will be made to answer: “The government and people of Ghana are tired of this kind of attitude. Our government is committed to get to the bottom of this matter and punish severely any people found to have been involved in this issues.”
