The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Paul Tawiah Quaye has taken delivery of some 35 vehicles from the government to boost the operational capacity of the Ghana Police Service, especially during the yuletide.
The Vice President, who presented the vehicles to the police at the forecourt of Parliament, urged the police administration to deploy more men on the streets to control traffic and adopt measures to save lives and property during the Christmas festivities.
He said the donation was part of government’s commitment to build the capacity of the police to deliver its job effectively.
He used the opportunity to call on the IGP to open investigation into circumstances under which cocaine exhibit admitted in court as evidence turned into sodium bicarbonate after re-examination by the court.
He noted that the culprits or anybody, whose negligence led to the swap of the stuff, would be duly punished.
In response, the IGP said there was no doubt that the crime rate goes up during festivities like Christmas.
However, the police have put in place measures that would nib the activities of robbers and traffic offenders, among others in the bud, he indicated.
He urged motorists and other road users to adhere to traffic regulations and show respect to police so they could enjoy accident-free Christmas.
The IGP used the opportunity to wish Ghanaians a merry Christmas and Happy prosperous New Year.
Earlier the Interior Minister, Benjamin Kunbuor, who welcomed the guests, said the donation marked a significant moment for government as it seeks to address the fundamental issues bordering on crime.
He said government would help the police to bring crime to the barest minimum, if not eradicated.
In attendance were members like Director General, Services, DCOP Frank Adu Poku, Director General Technical, DCOP Ofosu Gyeabour, Director General Operations, DCOP John Kudalor, Director General PIPS, Timothy Ashiley, among others.
