Editor-in-Chief of the New Crusading Guide newspaper, Abdul Malik Kweku Baako Jnr, has called into question the credibility of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) charged to investigate circumstances leading to the payment of GHS 42 million to a financier of the ruling government.
The organization was instructed by the President – John Evans Atta Mills – to undertake such investigation.
But Kweku Baako thinks the EOCO cannot be trusted to deal credibly with the issue at stake.
During a discussion on Peace FM’s current affairs programme Kokrokoo Wednesday, the editor explained that his cynicism towards EOCO is predicated on the manner in which it handled a matter involving the Ghana Football Association (GFA).
Officials of EOCO besieged the offices of the GFA some months ago and took away nine Central Processing Units, files and other documents which they said was to facilitate investigations into alleged breaches of the country's laws by the FA. The act was widely critisised by sections of the public sympathetic to the FA but EOCO vehemently defended it.
In view of this, Mr Kweku Baako said he had no faith in EOCO, which he said had behaved “like an unchained octopus” at the time, to do a good job as far as this case was concerned.
He, however, stressed this should not be interpreted as an attack on the organization.
Malik Baako appealed to all stakeholders on the matter, especially Ghanaians, to insist on having an alternative body to execute the investigation, saying: “I have no faith that they will do justice to this matter.”
“I think we should be looking for another option…I want an independent committee of inquiry…”
Former Deputy Sports Minister, O.B. Amoah, added that EOCO cannot handle this case because it falls under the authority of the Attorney General’s office which is a party in this matter.
