Beggars within the Tamale Central Business District have vowed to resist any attempt to eject them from the town center by the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) even if it meant going on demonstration. They have, however, not disclosed the nature of the possible demonstration excerpt to say that it could take any form with the soil aim of registering their protest and dissatisfaction. The beggars, who were made up of the visually impaired and the physically challenged, disclosed to The Finder that they heard an announcement on a radio station about plans by the assembly to eject them from their current location with the purpose of decongesting the area. Their current location, popularly called 'the beggars' lane,' serves as the main pedestrians and bicycle lane from the Zenith Bank near the main Taxi rank to the Vodafone office. The lane has been the centre of most business activities, including the sale of used or clothing while also serves as parking space for motorists who undertake businesses inside the Tamale Old Market. One of the beggars told The Finder that they had been at their current location even when Tamale had not developed to its current status, adding that “no authority anywhere would have the power to reject us.” The leader of the beggars in the metropolis, Afa Adam, a visually impaired man popularly called Chairman, complained about the TMA's lack of sympathy in attempting to eject them. “Why can't the assembly treat our case with a human face, if not for anything at all they should just enable us to cater for our families,” Afa Adam said, adding that “we have been here since Acheampong's era in the early 1970s.” Afa Adam said beggars also contributed their widow's mite to the development of the city due to the special prayers they offered for the progress of individuals and institutions including the TMA. The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the TMA, Mr Issah Salifu Musah, said the popular 'beggars lane' was a headache to the assembly, adding that they would do everything possible to maintain sanitation within the metropolis. “The assembly would evict all individuals operating businesses along the lane because they are doing so without permits,” the PRO said.
