The Ministry of Health is to review its maintenance contract with German firm, Gertech Technology, to ensure prompt attention to broken down equipment at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital. The decision was taken at an emergency meeting on Monday in Kumasi to find ways of addressing equipment break-down at the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit. It followed Nhyira Fm’s Ohemeng Tawiah’s under-cover investigative report. Nine out of 11 life-support equipment have been grounded for months, resulting in the death of at least six people. Health Minister, Joseph Yieleh Chireh, and other stakeholders including Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Agyemang Mensah, attended the meeting. It was established that the contractor was the cause of the problem because the hospital management had adequately informed the company about the situation. Officials of Gertech blamed recent uprising in Egypt for the delayed delivery of machine parts ordered from the manufacturer’s Africa office in Cairo. Meanwhile, the two parties have agreed to streamline reporting systems to prevent a recurrence of the current situation. A statement signed by Public Relations Officer, Kwame Frimpong of KATH, says the measure would ensure prompt response from Gertech to hospital management’s notices. Gertech has been charged to expedite action on repair of the equipment pending another meeting later in the week to assign responsibilities and monitor progress of work.
