The Asante Development Union (ADU) has put on hold its planned demonstration against the piloting of the health insurance capitation in the Ashanti region, pending the outcome of a proposed meeting with project implementers.
The non-profit organization has called for the abolition of the capitation, giving the National Health Insurance Authority an ultimatum to withdraw the policy with immediate effect; the ultimatum expired on Friday.
The Union had scheduled Monday, January 30 to embark on what leaders say are “massive continuous demonstrations” against the capitation.
Coordinator, Edmond Oppong-Peprah told Luv News the NHIA will be meeting with the Union at a scheduled meeting next Tuesday in attempts to address their concerns.
He however said the group’s position for the policy withdrawal has not changed.
“Our stance would be as we have proposed earlier; that the capitation should be withdrawn immediately. If it is not adhered to, we’d examined our next best option, including going on a demonstration,” he said.
The Union is of the view that choosing the whole of the Ashanti region as the sample size for the capitation piloting was too large.
It also says agitations of stakeholders, especially private health service providers, are enough grounds for the NHIA to halt the programme.
“Based on these we do not see the need for compromise at all; we cannot compromise with the health of the people”, Mr. Oppong-Peprah told Luv Fm.
