The top policewoman facing trial for her role in the cocaine-turned-baking soda saga, DSP Gifty Mawunyega Tehoda has been released from BNI cells.
DSP Tehoda was granted bail Tuesday by the Human Rights Court in Accra following an application for bail by her lawyers but the bail conditions were satisfied only today.
State prosecutors tried in vain to stop her bail.
The judge who presided over the bail hearing, Justice Kwesi Essel-Mensah said the charges proffered against DSP Tehoda were alien to the laws of Ghana and, therefore, her continued detention could not be justified.
A member of her legal team Oliver Dzegble welcomed her release saying it was long overdue.
He said the Deputy Head of the Commercial Crimes Unit of the Ghana Police Service will be in court next week to clear her name
The Bureau of National Investigation say they have sufficient belief that the police chief investigator – currently on interdiction – played a significant role in the cocaine swap case.
She has consistently pleaded her innocence.
The BNI say DSP Tehoda met with the primary suspect in the case, Nana Ama Martins, while she was in police custody in respect of substances the police say were in her possession and tested to be cocaine.
The investigative body contends that the police chief’s questionable interactions with the suspect is not unrelated to the later discovery that the substances had metamorphosed into baking soda.
