Teachers at the Kumasi Polytechnic have joined colleagues in other regions on a sit down strike over agitations on their migration unto the Single Spine Salary Structure (SSSS).
The spontaneous and unanimous decision was taken at an emergency meeting of the Polytechnic Teachers Association of Ghana (POTAG) on Thursday.
Local Chairman at K-Poly, Edmond Oppong-Peprah says the action is “absolute” and “Indefinite”, stating that returning to the classroom will be based on the firm conviction that members are fairly treated and better placed on the SSSS.
“This means we are not going to lecture, then again we’re not going for meetings or undertake any activity that is related to the academic. Any lecturer found in the classroom doing anything at all has questions to answer”, Mr. Oppong-Peprah told Luv Fm.
A meeting on Tuesday between POTAG, the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission and the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning ended in a stalemate.
Talks broke down as the polytechnic teachers resisted the low market premium suggested by the Ministry and the Commission.
POTAG members at the Takoradi Polytechnic have been embarked on a sit down strike, whilst the Sunyani Polytechnic branch has also hinted of a similar action.
