A number of youth clad in red and black thronged the offices of the Western Regional House of Chiefs to protest the relocation of the gas processing plant originally earmarked for Bonyere in the Jomoro District.Joy FM’s Western Region correspondent Kwaku Owusu Peprah reported that while the youth demonstrated outside, members of the Regional House Chief were also locked up in a meeting where they were being educated on the gas project by officials of the Ghana National Gas Company. The youth vowed that they would make it impossible for the government to site the project in any place other than in the Jomoro District.Initial reports, as claimed by the Chief Executive of the National Gas Company, Dr Sipa Yankey, suggest that the gas project would be sited at Atuabo in the Ellembele District, but the Ghana National Gas Company is saying they are yet to settle on a location – feasibility study is still ongoing. They however hinted that they would take into consideration the proximity of the project to the Aboadze Thermal Plant. It is therefore becoming evident that the gas plant would be built either at Atuabo or a location near that community because of its strategic position. Our correspondent gathered that although Bonyere might not host the gas plant, a military base would be put up there to protect Ghana’s oil find from any external aggression.
