The Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Organization has embarked on a community outreach to donate blood to the Kumasi South Hospital in the Ashanti region. The group says members are committed to the task of service to humanity through regular blood donation drives, irrespective of the belief and religious affiliation of people in need. “I think that life is something valuable than any other thing”, said Ibrahim Asare an Executive member of the Organization. “We have to be proactive. We don't have to wait for the time to come before we volunteer. We have to volunteer and save life instead of waiting for an emergency to come before we're called upon [only] to lose lives”. The Kumasi South Hospital had gone out to appeal to communities to voluntarily donate blood to replenish the stock at the blood bank. Mr. Asare told Luv Fm the Ahmadiyya youth were touched by the call and opted to turn attention to aid the hospital. He said similar donations have been carried out in other health centres, in addition to other environmental protection activities. “You don't have to entertain fear, it is a good exercise because screening will be done before you have to give out the blood… if we have the target that we want to save lives, then we have to go ahead and save lives no matter the condition attached to it”, he noted. The youth group donated about 50 pints of blood in the one-day exercise. Biomedical scientists at the Kumasi South Hospital, Kwabena Sarpong Okumankoma observed that such regular donors are critical to meet the blood needs of patients, especially pregnant women who visit the hospital.
