The immediate past Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana is blaming the perennial erratic power supply in the country on what he describes as poor and weak leadership. Reverend Dr. Yaw Frimpong-Manso laments Ghana’s inability to guarantee uninterrupted electricity 55 years after independence despite the country’s rich human and material resources. At a special service to elevate the Adukrom branch to district status in Kumasi, he said successive governments cannot escape blame for the plight of the people. Rev. Dr Frimpong-Manso also had some blame for the Public Utility Regulatory Commission (PURC) which he said had allowed the power providers to take the Ghanaian people for granted. “55 years as an independent nation, we are still having constant unplanned power outages that are destroying our things in our homes,” he said, adding that if the nation had good leadership, “these things should not be happening.” He said the political parties contesting this year’s elections must show clearly what they will do to reverse the situation. He also took issues with the poverty level as well as the widening gap between the poor and the rich in the country. “We have a lot more to do to empower the weak and vulnerable people amongst us. There must be an equitable distribution of the resources of nature and our nation for the welfare of children, unemployed youth, the physically challenged, old people and the generally poor and generally people amongst us,” he stated. The former Moderator said, “Instead of trading insults on the airwaves, I expect our politicians to debate on crucial issues…that affect the greater majority of the poor and vulnerable people, particularly regarding their welfare and upkeep.” He said the country’s political leaders must give the people hope and show a clear direction in solving the nation’s problems.
