Barely year after their return to Ghana from strife-torn Libya, some Ghanaians who were evacuated to Ghana at the height of the conflict in that country, are heading back. Reports from the Ashanti region indicate that the Libyan returnees who settled in the Kumasi Metropolis particularly in suburbs such as Aboabo, Sawaba, Alaba, Old Tafo, Sabun Zongo and Yelwa have started their journey back to the North African country. The returnees, who have been in Ghana for barely a year, have cited prevailing economic hardship as well as the political stability in Libya as reasons for their return. A number of them told correspondent Mahmud Mohammed-Nurudeen in Kumasi frequent telephone conversations with their colleagues back in Libya indicated all was well in many cities and towns in that country. “Libya is now stable and peace is prevailing. Here, we have no job to do”, one of them said. While praising the Ghanaian government for ensuring their safety by evacuating them, they complained little was done to occupy them with income generating ventures. At the Kumasi Magazine area, one of the returnees confirmed that some of his colleagues had already left for their former base in Libya. Kwame Naja, a returnee however said he does not consider a return to Libya a prudent move because of previous experiences while living there. According to him, job was difficult to come by even for persons who are educated. It is unclear for now how the new transition government in Libya will handle the return of African migrants to the country after thousands of them had been evacuated by their governments during the North African revolt a year ago.
