The Standing Committee of the Western Regional House of Chiefs has thrown its full weight behind government’s intention to relocate the gas processing plant from Domunli in the Jomoro District to Atuabo in the Ellembele District all in the Western Region.
Addressing a news conference in Accra, the President of the House, Awulae Atibrikusu III said the chiefs declared support for the move after a consultative meeting with officials of the Ghana Gas Company Limited.
According to him, the chiefs are now convinced it will cost more to cite the project in Domunli, since some communities there will have to be relocated and compensated as compared to Atuabo if the project was to be completed on schedule.
He also cited the distance from Domunli to the Aboadze thermal plant in Tema as another reason for supporting government in the re-location bid.
“The distance from Domunli to the Aboadze thermal plant in Tema is 130 kilometers, whiles from Atuabo to Aboadze is 110 kilometers. Hence the setting up of the project in Atuabo will enable government to save more money to ensure the speedy completion of the project”, the chief explained.
Residents of Domunli he indicated still stood to benefit from the project, especially when the power plant and petrochemical industries remain in the Domunli enclave.
“Nananom are more interested in the development of the Western Region and Ghana as a whole, and we urge the chiefs and people of Western Region to work together for the Region’s development”, he added.
