Mental health workers and providers of mental health services have expressed gratitude to Parliament, the Health Minister, Alban Bagbin and his deputy Rojo Mettle-Nunoo for their commitment in ensuring the passage of the Mental Health Bill.
The Chief Psychiatrist of the Ghana Health Services, Dr. Akwasi Osei said the passage of the bill will go a long way to ensure that the streets are cleared of mentally challenged persons.
The bill makes room for budgetary allocation to cater for all mentally challenged persons found on the streets.
Similarly, District Assemblies will have to cater for persons with unstable mind on the streets in their catchment areas with funds from the allocations provided for in the budget.
According to Dr. Osei, patients who undergo successful treatment will be integrated back into the society.
The Bill which was passed on March 2 2012, has been in Parliament for the past eight years for consideration hence the appreciation showed by the health workers.
Dr. Akwasi Osei was however hopeful, the President will assent to the bill for it to become fully operational.
He also urged all stakeholders to help with the enforcement of the law when it is finally operational.
