The Ghana Federation of Traditional Medicine Practitioners has petitioned the health minister, accusing the Food and Drugs Board of heavy handedness.
The traditional medicine practitioners say the FDB has refused to register their products over the past two years because of some new tests it wants them to run.
They claim both the Centre for Scientific Research into Plant Medicine and the Korle-bu Teaching hospital do not have the capacity to run the required tests being demanded by the FDB.
National Organizer Nana Obiri in an interview with Joy News said the situation is killing their businesses.
“The only letter they wrote [to] us is that we should go and do the chronic toxicity test, at Korle Bu. We went to Korle bu, there is nowhere in Korle bu for doing any such test. FDB says no, they should not use our products in the hospitals. So now honorable, we are just there and our products are not being registered,” he lamented.
Paramount Chief of Logba Traditional Area and patron of the Federation Togbega Dabra complained about some unfair practices against herbal medical doctors.
“We have about hundred herbal doctors who have been posted to some hospitals. Even the consulting rooms for them to work are not there. Even the products; herbal medicines that they will use only few of them have them. And to add insults to injury they went to the banks and each person’s account was credited with only twenty three Ghana Cedis.”
Health Minister Alban Bagbin said government will look into the concerns of the traditional medicine practitioners to create more jobs and improve health service delivery.
“The medicine that will work in Europe might not work at the same level of efficacy in Africa because our make, environment and everything is different. And we totally support you. His Excellency the President is very much committed to seeing through traditional medicine to the highest level. We will see how we can convene a meeting to discuss these issues,” he promised.
