Nine suspected gays and a lesbian are seeking refuge at the premises of an NGO here in Accra after threats to harm them.
They are escaping severe attacks from vigilante youths in James Town who claim to be redeeming them from their sexual orientation.
The victims claim they have no police protection in the community and fear for their lives.
On Sunday, the vigilante group stormed a birthday party for a suspected lesbian and assaulted and looted the celebrants.
Since then the victims, some of who have ‘confessed’ to being homosexuals have known no peace.
Their houses and families have been under constant attacks from the vigilante group who claim to be acting with the consent of the police.
One of the victims seeking refuge at the offices of an NGO told Joy News’ Paa Kwesi Asare he was assaulted together with his mother one night.
Another also accused the vigilante group of looting anytime they attack.
The Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit of the Police service has said it would investigate the attacks and prosecute suspects.
