A sick ten month old baby who was turned away at the komfo Anokye Teaching hospital because of the strike by the Junior Doctors has died.
He died Wednesday dawn on his way to another hospital.
Uncle of the deceased Ofori Eric said his nephew suddenly felt sick at 2:00 am and was rushed to the Tafo Government Hospital where they were told the doctors were also on strike.
He said they quickly rushed him to the komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital but there too they were turned away. The child died on their way to the third hospital, he said.
Meanwhile, the striking Junior Doctors are banking their hopes on the assurances of the Health Minister who is promising to make available an amount of 1 million cedis to ameliorate the situation in the hospital.
The doctors embarked on strike over poor conditions at the hospital. They cited erratic power supply in the hospital, shortage of medicine and other issues they claim affected the health delivery at the hospital.
But their decision did not go down well with the management and Board of the hospital.
Board Chairman of the Hospital Dr. Louis Bartels De Bordes described the strike as unethical and accused the doctors of skipping duties and reporting late to work.
The president of the Junior Doctors Association, Lawrence Osei Tutu told Joy News “they have taken note of the persistent character assassinations by the Board Chairman of KATH which is bringing the very noble profession into disrepute.”
He said they will petition the Ghana Medical Association to investigate the misconduct of the Board chairman.
On the strike, Osei Tutu said they will be meeting later this week to assess the intervention made by the health minister before a substantive decision on whether to call off the strike will be taken.
