Junior doctors at the Komfo Anokye Teaching hospital have suspended their indefinite strike but have called for the dissolution of the hospital’s Board.
It follows a meeting with the Ghana Medical Association Sunday. The doctors declared an indefinite strike last Monday to protest poor working conditions at the hospital.
President of the Junior Doctors Association, Dr. Osei Tutu told Joy News they took the decision because they have seen some changes being put in place by management of the hospital.
“The realistic situation on the ground is that…most of the drugs that we requested for are in now, the theatres that were not working at the Accident and Emergency Centre are working now, …the air conditioners that were not fixed in the theatres, in the main theatre are there,” he said.
As a consequence, the junior doctors, he said, have decided to suspend the strike effective today, with the hope that “in the next month all the other things that they are working on, we will have direct access to them…”
Dr. Osei said the doctors are also asking government to dissolve the Board of the hospital because they cannot trust its members to do a good job.
He said the doctors had also lost confidence in the management of the hospital expressing doubts over the management’s ability to judiciously manage the monies voted by the Health Ministry to the hospital.
“What it means is that we are looking forward to this implementation committee which the minister says he is forming. Meanwhile our members will be vigilant in all their units and be monitoring the events as they go on,” he added.
