A new road safety campaign targeted at educating drivers as well as checking their vehicles at transport terminals has been launched in Accra. The campaign is a joint initiative of Guinness Ghana Breweries Limited (GGBL) and the National Drivers Academy (NDA) aimed at providing “end to end” service by focusing the efforts of transport unions, government road safety agencies and corporate Ghana on the provision of driver education and vehicle checks. The campaign will also involve passenger empowerment backed by mandatory road side safety checks on the high accident long distance routes in and out of Accra. Under “Triad” (as the campaign has been named), the Police MTTU and DVLA will deploy alcohol meters along high risk routes to enforce the compliance of both commercial and private drivers to road safety regulations. Drivers who are found to have traces of alcohol on their breath will have their keys taken from them while the Police MTTU will call on a second driver from the same lorry to carry through the affected driver’s journey. Speaking at the launch of the campaign, Deputy Director, Research Monitoring and Evaluation at the National Road Safety Commission, Rudolph Beckley cautioned drivers to obey road rules and regulations as no one will be spared if caught doing otherwise. He also called on passengers to speak out and ensure that the drivers of the vehicles they are travelling in are doing the right thing. Leaders of the various transport unions at the Neoplan station at Circle where the campaign was launched called on drivers to obey the road rules as well as put into consideration the lives of their passengers. Members of the National Drivers Academy and BM King demonstrated how the alcohol meter works to the drivers. The campaign takes off on Monday, April 2. The major highways and accident prone routes that “Triad” will focus on are Accra-Kumasi, Accra-Cape Coast, Accra-Aflao and Accra-Ho.
