The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) says it will issue fresh invitations to Mr Yaw Osafo-Maafo and Mr O.B. Amoah to assist in its investigations into the payment of judgement debt to Mr Alfred Woyome. The decision follows the ruling by the Accra Fast Track High Court which dismissed an application by Mr Osafo-Maafo to prevent EOCO from inviting him to assist in investigations into the payment of GH¢51.2 million in judgement debt to Mr Woyome. A senior official of EOCO told graphic.com.gh in Accra that the office would also comply with the directives given by the court asking it to ensure, among other things, that applicants appeared before it in the company of their lawyers and that the office adhered to the rights of the individuals, as enshrined in the 1992 Constitution. According to the official, EOCO had written to invitees in the past and always stated whether they were the subjects of investigations or not. He said subjects of investigations had always appeared before EOCO in the company of their lawyers and the office had always treated them fairly and without prejudice. The senior official, who wants to remain anonymous, said EOCO did not consider the recent ruling as a “victory” to gloat over but rather an authoritative pronouncement to carry out its constitutional mandate, which the suit filed by the two was meant to stop. The Accra Fast Track High Court, on Wednesday, dismissed an application which prayed it to bar EOCO from inviting Mr Osafo-Maafo to assist in investigations into the payment of GH¢51.2 million to Mr Woyome. It also declined to stop EOCO from investigating the role played by Mr Amoah, a former Deputy Minister of Education and Sports, in the award of contracts for the construction of stadia for CAN 2008. In effect, EOCO can proceed with investigations into the circumstances leading to the eventual payment of the huge amount.
