Deputy Minister of Energy, Alhaji Inusah Fuseini says the government has chalked an unprecedented success in the electricity sector, frequent power outages notwithstanding. According to him, the government has boosted the capacity of the Electricity Company of Ghana (EGC) in a manner that was never recorded by the Kufuor Administration. The Minister said for instance, the government added 132 megawatts of power in 2009 and has since added another 45 megawatts. By June/July this year, the minister said, 230 megawatts of power would be added while 400 megawatts will be added in 2013 to enhance the ECG's energy storage capacity. He further explained that due to the high demand for power, 100 megawatts of energy must be generated each year and insisted that the Mills-led government has done exactly that, unlike the erstwhile Kufuor government which he claimed failed to meet the requirement. Alhaji Fuseini added that Ghana would have been richer in power generation if the past government had paid attention to the sector. He maintained that the Mills government’s commitment to the electricity sector has resulted in unprecedented successes in terms of power generation. “So we can say that it’s unprecedented because in three years we’ve been able to add about 150 megawatts to the storage capacity,” the minister maintained, adding that the nation would have experienced intense blackouts if not for the interventions. Meanwhile the ECG has announced plans to expand its load-shedding exercise to cover more areas.
