The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has explained its decision to close down the Saba and Pantang land fill sites is as a result of poor management.Accra West Regional Director of the Agency, Kwabena Badu-Yeboah told Joy News Television’s Dorcas Ankomah the two dumping sites are almost full and their closure will prevent a possible epidemic.Earlier this month, the EPA announced it will shut down the only two remaining dumping sites in the city sparking concerns over alternatives as well as waste management in the capital. He said to date, there are unresolved issues over co-habitation between residents and the refuse sites, a situation that often triggers confusion. He warned managers of the landfill sites to facilitate their closure with immediate effect. He said the provision of alternative dumping sites rests with the various district and metropolitan assemblies, saying “Ghanaians must begin to think recycling seriously”.Government is currently supporting private waste management company, Zoomlion in the construction of a Waste Recycling Plant at Adjen Kotoku.Mr. Badu-Yeboah thus called for a national conference to discuss the country’s waste management issues. When the news team visited the Saba landfill site at Weija, several trucks were busily compressing the refuse. The team also discovered the site serves as a place of convenience for many inhabitants near the dump site.
