Women’s rights advocates have urged victims of violence to report cases of abuse to the appropriate authorities for the law take its course thereby helping curb incidence of violence against women. According to them, violence against women remains a challenge confronting the nation despite numerous education and sensitization programmes adding that it behooves victims to take up the responsibility to stop the practice. The Acting Secretary of the Domestic Violence Secretariat, Christiana Boateng-Ankamah and the CEO of Global Women Inventors and Innovations Network, Bola Olabisi both called for increased awareness amongst women to take bold steps against violence when they appeared on Joy News TV’s pm: EXPRESS on Multi TV. Madam Boateng-Ankamah stated that reporting abuse may not always result in the perpetrators being put in jail but there are alternative measures such as counseling which helps stem abuse. She noted domestic violence occurs at all levels in our society hence causing a lot of harm to families. Government is currently constructing shelters in four regions as part of many activities to support victims. Bola Olabisi advocated more men should join the campaign on violence against women. “Times have changed, beating someone is a sign of weakness. True men and women know how to control themselves” she said. She also called for women to be empowered through education and financial independence to help exercise their rights.
