The Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) has disputed reports which appeared on Thursday that its offices were under siege by contractors who are demanding payment for works completed over eight months ago. The contractors on Thursday morning marched to the offices of the GETFund to demand outstanding payments owed them after executing contracts on behalf of the trust fund. According to the contractors, monies owed them is in excess of Gh¢118 million. They added that the failure of GETFund to pay them has affected their businesses with their banks also pursuing them for loans they contracted to execute the said jobs. Some of the contractors took a swipe at the government’s green book which lists projects constructed under GETFund adding that the book contains some structures which the government has not paid for yet parading them. As a last resort to ensure their monies are paid to them with immediate effect, the contractors said they might petition the presidency to ensure that what is duly owed them is paid them accordingly. However, the Public Relations Officer of the GETFund, Stephen Baffoe said it is regrettable that the contractors have not been paid up to now. He further added that although the disgruntled contractors trooped to the offices of the GETFund, no worker of the facility was harmed as a result of the 'invasion'. According to the PRO, the GETFund Administrator and the board are working with the Ministry of Finance and the Bank of Ghana to ensure that the contractors are paid as soon as possible. Although the PRO conceded that huge progress has been made in this regard, he however fell short of giving a specific deadline as to exactly when the contractors will get their monies. Nevertheless, Stephen Baffoe insisted that the contractors would not have to wait longer than they have already done before they get their monies.
