The Weija Leprosarium now has a new complex to accommodate inmates. The new complex consists of a hall, office, store room, kitchen and an apartment for a resident nurse. Commodity trading firm, Global Haulage Company funded the construction of the complex at a cost of GH¢ 160,000, following an appeal by the Lepers Aid Committee. The facility is therefore named after the company. Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Chairman of the Lepers Aid Committee, Reverend Father Andrew Campbell bemoaned the poor state of infrastructure at the leprosarium, saying it is making life difficult for inmates. “This is the first building that has been put up for the lepers and we hope to build more for them to make life more comfortable for them”, he stated. He said the 20 pesewas per day given to each inmate of the Weija Leprosarium is not enough. Currently, there are 820 cured lepers in Ghana with 407 in the Upper West region and 101 in Nkanchina in the Kpandai District of Ghana.
