With the rainy season fast approaching, residents of Wangara Line in Techiman in the Brong Ahafo region, especially those living in close proximity of the Atwereadaa River, behind the Techiman main market have a lot to worry about.
Residents fear the worst as the river bursts its banks during the same period each year destroying lives and property.
The absence of a defense wall to direct the course of the water and insanitary conditions, particularly dumping of refuse along the banks of the river have been noted to be among the major reasons for the flooding.
Speaking in an interview with Joy News Television, a resident of Techiman Wangara, Kwame Frimpong lamented the poor sanitary conditions and said they have resulted in a high incidence of diseases including malaria, typhoid and cholera which have adversely affected their productivity.
An opinion leader in the area, Nana Obeng Banabas, said the community with the help of the assembly member, Ameyaw Abubakar have worked hard to clean the mess along the river.
He added that, a ‘Good Samaritan’ in the area tried to build a defense wall to prevent River Atwereadaa from overflowing whenever it rained but he was stopped by the city authorities for blocking the water ways.
The Assembly Member for the area, Ameyaw Abubakar, has since appealed to the Techiman Traditional Council and the Municipal Assembly to help solve the problem in the long term and is hopeful that their hard work will one day pay off.
