The Ghana Real Estate Development Association (GREDA) is advocating a sustainable non-partisan National Housing Policy, to be enforced by government to reduce the country’s housing deficit. The policy, according to GREDA will enable more Ghanaians secure homes at affordable cost. Currently, there is an estimated housing deficit of about 1.5 million and GREDA is seeking the mandate to reverse the trend. Executive Secretary of GREDA, Sammy Amegayibor told a news conference in Accra the Association had done everything in its ambit to collaborate with government for an efficient housing scheme for the country. The news conference was to react to comments made by the Minister for Water Resources, Works and Housing, Enoch Teye Mensah. The GREDA President, Dr. Alex Tweneboah pledged the Association’s commitment to build houses for Ghanaians indicating GREDA is non-partisan and thus not a mouth piece for any political party. He also indicated that GREDA was eager to use local materials when undertaking construction projects, in order to reduce the high cost of buildings in the country. He thus stressed the need for government to develop the capacity of the local industry by ensuring the availability of local building materials on a large scale.
