Utility service providers will not see increase in tariffs in the second quarter under the automatic adjustment formula as they expected.The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission which is mandated to approve the new tariffs says it is not impressed with the quality of service delivery.It cites system collapses, frequent outages in power as well as poor management of the load shedding program as reasons for its decision.Director for Public Affairs at the PURC Nana Yaa Jantuah has been providing details of the commission’s decision.She said especially with electricity services have been deplorable, adding “we didn’t want to overburden the consumer and pass on any cost that will be high.”“So we decided that there will no be increase for the electricity utility this quarter," she told Joy News' Dzifa Bampoh.For water supply, Yaa Jantuah said they also rely extensively on electricity, saying "if there is no increase in electricity then there is no need to increase their tariff for them."He said with water, consumers have the option of storing once the rationing process is great but said the same cannot be said about electricity.She chided the electricity officials for poor management of the load shedding process they themselves announced.Yaa Jantua said apart from complaints the Commission receives from time to time from consumers, it conducts its monitoring exercises all the time to find out areas where there is no water or electricity before coming out with its quarterly decisions.
