The Executive Secretary of the Narcotic Control Board (NACOB), Mr Yaw Akrasi-Sarpong has called on politicians to show commitment towards the eradication of narcotic trade in the country, and desist from paying lip service to tackling the problem. He said it was about time that the various political parties stopped accusing each other of encouraging drug trade, and charged them to institute self-auditing measures among their members. “…Let every political party not just talk, make noise, but as part of its own political work [they should do] some analyses of drug use and prevalence in the communities where they operate…” Speaking in an interview with Joy FM’s Sammy Darko, Mr Sarpong stated that it was fallacious for anybody to assume that fighting the drug menace is the responsibility of only the state because “the state includes all institutions including political parties who want to enter government.” He said the parties must “encourage their structures to engage law enforcement [agencies] on the ground to deal with [illicit] drugs.” Doing this, he said, will ensure the depoliticisation of the fight against the menace because it will “become the people’s agenda…it is about citizens’ security…” “We have to depoliticise this thing (the fight against drugs) once and for all, period,” the NACOB boss insisted.
